Author Guidelines
Aim & Scope
The Journal of Cultural Research in Art Education (jCRAE) is an annual publication focusing on the cultural and social aspects of art education. It explores topics such as the cultural foundations of art education, cross-cultural and multicultural research, and the cultural implications of art in education. The journal welcomes research using various methods, including qualitative, quantitative, and visual approaches.
Acceptance Rate & Readership
jCRAE enlists a competitive peer review selection process with an acceptance rate of approximately 30%. The full-color, digital publication has a global audience of over 800 readers.
Submission Details
The Journal encourages authors worldwide to submit manuscripts. All manuscripts and alternative format submissions should not have been previously published, nor before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
Authors of accepted manuscripts will be asked to closely format their article according to the following formatting guidelines. As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
Please note that jCRAE uses iThenticate to screen papers for unoriginal material. By submitting your paper to jCRAE you are agreeing to originality checks during the peer-review and production processes.
Accepted Submission Formats
A variety of formats are welcome including:
- Traditional Academic Essay: The word count for the complete manuscript, not including references and footnotes, should not exceed 5,000 words.
- Visual Essay: Image-based submissions should be accompanied by explanatory text of approximately 1000-1500 words.
- Alternative Format: Submissions in this format are required to provide an abstract and keywords to support the content. Examples of alternative formats include graphic novel/comic-style submissions.
Document Format
All manuscript files should be in Word (.docx) format. For submission of alternative/digital formats, please consult with the Senior Editor for submission preference.
- Title Page: containing the author's name(s) and affiliation(s). Please note: book reviews do not require a title page.
- Abstract and Keywords: a brief abstract of approximately 100-150 words and 5-7 keywords
- Style: The text is double-spaced; uses Times New Roman 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses)
- Figures and Images: illustrations, figures, images, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end. Images should also be uploaded to Janeway separately as .jpg or .pdf documents. High quality images are a requirement for publication (150+ dpi). They must also secure releases for the use of all copyrighted information and images not their own—including but not limited to drawings, photographs, graphs, charts, tables, and illustrations.*
- Citations: written papers should be in APA style 7th edition. Authors are responsible for the accuracy of references and quotations. Authors should make sure they are correct, in substance and style. Where available, URLs and DOIs for the references have been provided.
- Removal of Identifying Information: the manuscript file should include no information that might identify the author or his/her institutional affiliation to reviewers. (Note: This information will be reinserted if the manuscript is accepted for publication).
- Ethics and Releases: The author or authors are responsible for securing human subjects review of studies involving human participants.
- *Avoid technologies that are unstable, such as QR codes. In place of these access technologies, please provide a direct URL.
Ensuring a Blind Review
To ensure the integrity of the blind peer-review for submission to this press, every effort should be made to prevent the identities of the authors and reviewers from being known to each other. This involves the authors, editors, and reviewers (who upload documents as part of their review) checking to see if the following steps have been taken with regard to the text and the file properties:
- The authors of the document have deleted their names from the text, with "Author" and year used in the references and footnotes, instead of the authors' name, article title, etc.
- With Microsoft Office documents, author identification should also be removed from the properties for the file (see under File in Word), by clicking on the following, beginning with File on the main menu of the Microsoft application: File > Save As > Tools (or Options with a Mac) > Security > Remove personal information from file properties on save > Save.
- With PDFs, the authors' names should also be removed from Document Properties found under File on Adobe Acrobat's main menu.
Peer Review
All manuscripts will undergo a blind review by two reviewers from the Review Board of jCRAE. Upon review, authors will receive a recommendation from the Senior Editor (and sometimes Guest Co-editor) for either Acceptance; Minor Revisions; Major Revisions; or Rejection. Revisions are common and expected upon primary review of a manuscript submission.
Authors receive notification from Janeway of their manuscript submission. The review process generally takes several months after the editors receive the manuscript.
The Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
The use of generative AI and AI-assisted tools in figures, images, and artwork
jCRAE does not permit the use of generative AI or AI-assisted tools to create or alter images in submitted manuscripts.
The only exception is if the use of generative AI or AI-assisted tools is part of the research design or research methods (such as in AI-assisted imaging approaches to generate or interpret the underlying research data, for example in the field of biomedical imaging). If this is done, such use must be described in a reproducible manner in the methods section. This should include an explanation of how the generative AI or AI-assisted tools were used in the image creation or alteration process, and the name of the model or tool, version and extension numbers, and manufacturer.
jCRAE is monitoring ongoing developments in this area closely and will review (and update) these policies as appropriate.
