Abstract

Despite some claims to the contrary (e.g., Stanley 1981) , paleo-anthropological scenarios have tended to incorporate both anagenesis and cladogenesis, though in a "transformational" framework. After the initial focus on stasis and cladogenesis in the fossil record by Eldredge and Gould (1972) , the seminal attempt to place hominid evolution in such a novel framework (Eldredge and Tattersail 1975) unfortunately appeared as an afterthought to a discussion of theoretical systematics.
