Managing Editor (Contract Position)

Position Overview

The Black Theatre Review seeks an organized, collaborative, and visionary Managing Editor to oversee the full scope of editorial, production, and publication operations for this biannual journal. Working closely with the Editor-in-Chief, the Managing Editor serves as the journal's primary operational leader, coordinating peer review, contributor communications, issue development, digital publication, and multimedia integration. The Managing Editor plays a critical role in ensuring the continued growth and excellence of the only journal dedicated exclusively to Black theatre scholarship.

To ensure a successful transition and continued growth of the journal, the Black Theatre Review is seeking applicants well in advance of the official August 2027 start date. Selected candidates will work with current editorial staff during a structured transition period, allowing time to build relationships, learn editorial and production systems, and contribute to planning for future issues. This approach reflects the journal's commitment to mentorship, continuity, and stewardship of the premier venue for Black theatre scholarship.

Responsibilities

Editorial Management
  • Manage the complete editorial workflow from submission intake through final publication
  • Conduct initial reviews of submissions and make recommendations in consultation with the Editor-in-Chief
  • Oversee peer review processes, including reviewer selection, communication, and deadline tracking
  • Coordinate with authors regarding revisions, editorial guidance, and final approvals
  • Maintain author agreements and editorial documentation
  • Finalize issue contents and sequencing in consultation with the Editor-in-Chief
Digital Publication and Multimedia Curation
  • Oversee publication of each issue using the Janeway platform
  • Ensure accuracy, consistency, and accessibility of published content
  • Maintain and update the journal's website and digital presence
  • Serve as liaison with the University of Arizona Libraries regarding hosting and technical support
  • Lead the planning and integration of visual, audio, and other multimedia elements that support artistic practice as scholarship
Staff Coordination and Communication
  • Provide oversight of the Production Copyeditor and Book Review Editor
  • Coordinate workflows, timelines, and publication schedules
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for authors, reviewers, and partners
  • Collaborate with the Editor-in-Chief on contributor outreach, issue planning, and editorial decisions
Administrative Responsibilities
  • Track editorial and production expenses
  • Prepare and issue invoices
  • Maintain records of contracts and financial documentation
  • Prepare annual reports for review by the Black Theatre Network Executive Board

  • Familiarity with digital publishing, website management, or multimedia content is beneficial

Annual Stipend: $3,500 ($1,750 per issue)

Production Copyeditor (Contract Position)

Position Overview

The Black Theatre Review seeks a detail-oriented Production Copyeditor to support the editing and production of accepted manuscripts. Reporting to the Managing Editor, this position focuses on copyediting, formatting, proofreading, and publication preparation to ensure that all journal content meets the highest standards of scholarly excellence and presentation. The position is particularly well suited for early-career scholars, editors, and publishing professionals interested in academic publishing and Black theatre scholarship.

Copyediting and Manuscript Preparation
  • Perform line and copyediting of accepted manuscripts
  • Ensure adherence to the latest edition of the Chicago Manual of Style
  • Standardize formatting, citations, and manuscript structure
  • Prepare clean, publication-ready files
  • Flag editorial queries and inconsistencies for resolution
Production Preparation
  • Track manuscripts through editing and proof stages
  • Prepare files for publication on digital platforms
  • Assist in assembling issue components, including front matter, contributor biographies, and tables of contents
  • Ensure formatting consistency across all published materials
Proofing and Revisions
  • Communicate with authors regarding edits and proofs
  • Incorporate revisions and finalize manuscripts
  • Conduct final proofreading in consultation with the Managing Editor and Editor-in-Chief
  • Ensure the accuracy of citations and metadata
Collaboration
  • Work closely with the Managing Editor, Editor-in-Chief, and Book Review Editor to meet publication deadlines
  • Support efficient production workflows under the supervision of the Managing Editor
  • Maintain documentation of edits and manuscript versions

  • Experience editing academic, professional, or publication-oriented writing
  • Familiarity with scholarly writing conventions and citation practices
  • Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style, the style guide used by the journal
  • Ability to identify errors, inconsistencies, and formatting issues with accuracy and efficiency
  • Experience preparing publication-ready documents and managing revisions
  • Strong editorial judgment and commitment to precision
  • Interest in Black theatre scholarship, performance studies, or related humanities fields
