Abstract
Cannabis sativa (marijuana) is an herbal substance widely consumed for both recreational and medicinal purposes. This narrative review examines the cognitive, behavioral, and developmental effects of marijuana use during adolescence and its implications in adulthood. Drawing on interdisciplinary scientific research, the study explores marijuana’s dual composition: cannabidiol (CBD), a compound recognized for its therapeutic potential in treating anxiety, sleep disorders, and chronic pain, and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component responsible for euphoria and altered perception. While CBD has demonstrated beneficial medical applications, THC has been associated with neurocognitive impairment, reduced motivation, and addiction, particularly among adolescents whose brains are still developing. National research findings indicate that frequent THC exposure during adolescence may disrupt memory formation, executive functioning, and emotional regulation, leading to lasting behavioral consequences in adulthood. Additionally, sociological perspectives suggest that adolescent marijuana use may stem from identity exploration and social rebellion, which reinforce dependency and risk-taking behaviors. Beyond individual effects, marijuana use among adolescents has become a pressing public-health issue, with legalization, higher THC potency, and easier access contributing to rising dependence and neurocognitive risk. The review emphasizes that although marijuana carries potential therapeutic value, misuse among youth for euphoric purposes can have long-term cognitive and psychological costs.
