Abstract
The policy underlying the judicial power to punish for contempt is the obvious necessity of maintaining and, where necessary, vindicating, the supremacy of the courts and of their decrees with respect to matters within their constitutionally conferred competence. The contempt powers of the Arizona courts derive from both statutory and common law. Together, these sources afford the courts extensive authority over a wide variety of conduct. This comment is intended to constitute a useful outline, based upon existing Arizona statutory and case law, of the extent of that authority in Arizona and of the types of conduct to which it may be applied.
