Abstract
Appellate review of juvenile court decisions traditionally has been considered to be a privilege rather than a right. Even in the landmark decision, In re Gault, the Supreme Court of the United States specifically declined to decide whether such a right existed. As a result, the existence and form of juvenile appellate review has remained a matter of state discretion. This section will examine the nature of such review in Arizona and will analyze some of the major legal issues which arise in the appellate process.
