Abstract
Plaintiffs asserting claims under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 might have difficulty recovering damages for dignitary harm if they are required to make a showing of actual damages. The author examines the scope of the actual damage rule applied by the Supreme Court in Carey v. Piphus.
